Not sure about the mos. I'm really just starting to dig into this for him.

Cool bro. Considering I am very senior in the Army Reserve, I can ensure you get the right information. In general, it is a partnership with the Army Reserve unit he is joining and the local industry. They both have a vested interested in having skilled workers.

How different is the process to be a commissioned officer in the reserves as compared to active duty? Isn't there a process for direct commission?

Process technology, isn't that a two year degree? Does he really want to serve guard or reserve? I only ask because minor certain of the tuition costs. I wouldn't think that it is a lot and that the process operators make a good living. So it wouldn't take long to pay off any debt if he had any?
The recruiter made it sound like he would be a shoe in for a job with the degree and military background. That's the bottom line. His uncle retired from the Army last year and is trying to talk him out of it. His logic is that the army wants guys trained in plant process so that they can later call them up to active duty because of the oil fields in the Middle East.

I was actually quite surprised in how often officers receive a direct commission in the Army Reserve, particularly in my AOC (Medical Service Corps - 70B). It is a board process conducted (I believe) twice a year. The primary requirement is an undergraduate degree of any sort. I have to be honest, I am not a fan of the direct commissioning process. I am a former NCO (SSG 11B) and an ROTC graduate (DMG) and they (too often) do not have the leadership experience and/or training necessary to be an effective officer. Just my opinion in that regard. Would much rather OCS or ROTC graduates (we only infrequently get USMA graduates after they have completed their statuatory obgligation).

I concur. I wasn't sure how the process worked. I recently got discharged from active duty served my four years as a 68w. I could have picked up my e6 if I stayed in. I'm taking my prerequisites before I get accepted into a physician assistant program. Spent my last year at ft. Stewart's medical simulation training center and at West Point during the summer time for their field training and the new cadets basic training.

With that said I recently joined the reserves and haven't received my orders as of yet. im sure ill get them soon.I'd rather get my feet in the door on the reserve side before I make the decision of seeking a commission.

If you don't mind me asking how old are you and what did you enlist to do?
Posted on 11/27/14 at 2:47 pm to momentoftruth87
I'm 32 I enlisted as a medic because I was wanting to go to pt school. But I decided to go to pa school instead. I didn't learn much clinical care. Since people knew how strong I was; I got tasked with being attached to the distro platoon in my battalion. i was in a brigade support battalion. infantry unit would have been fun. I went out on a lot of convoys during my deployment.

Drop me a line to my gmail account. I am currently stationed at Fort Gordon commanding the 1st Medical Training Brigade. I can lend you a hand in finding a 68W assignment in the Army Reserve. Finding a 70B vacancy is very difficult. We simply do not have the positions. Plenty of opportunities for 65D in the Army Reserve using the IPAP. Just a tough cut (as you are aware). Saw in the Army Times an announcement that they are going to offer programs to help enlisted Soldiers pursue a medical degree as well. Undergraduate and graduate program.

14 years in Army Logistics and it has helped me get hired in my Civilian Logistics position. In fact, I outshined several insiders trying to move up I the business that couldn't compete with my resume.

This.
Be careful. Recruiters get bonuses at the end of the year based on quota. They will flat lie and harass your family if your son shows any signs of having second thoughts. I served. Would do it again.

I should have clarified I was able to pick up 68w slot in segoville, tx since I just relocated to northeast texas. I wish I could have stayed in georgia. augusta isnt too bad.But yeah ill be more than happy to drop you a line. I am interested in the ipap. I'm hoping my bs and masters degree gives my an edge (I'm a nerd when it comes to academics). Both my ncoers are good; i received two 2,1's. I should have received at least two more ncoers. Then again I know NCOs who never received any and are Sfc's .

I just haven't received my orders from the medical brigade that I am attached to. Maybe I can get an e6 slot soon. How recent is that army times article? Last two weeks?

You are on your way to either the 94th Combat Support Hospital or the 341st Medical Battalion (Multifunctional). They are both in Seagoville (my first AGR assignment actually - interesting). They are subordinate battalions of the 176th Medical Brigade (my best friend is the AGR S3 for the BDE). Bottom line, I am well connected across that organization. You are going to experience some culture shock (I will not deny it) but if you focus on making a difference you will be amazed at how many people will seek you out for leadership/guidance.

Enlisted soldiers wanted for medical school
Just drop me a line at xxxxxx@gmail.com and I will gladly lend a hand.
(I was the S3 for Task Force Med Eagle during SFOR 9. We were subordinated to the 3rd ID. Refused to sing the Dog Face Soldier song in the morning during PT. Got caught by the G3 SGM and got lit up for it )

Recruiters lie.
That being said, if he wants trade skills the army will hand him a rifle.
Try the Navy or Air Force.
