It's not uncommon for cops to make over 100k by working a lot of overtime.

You guys need to not confuse overtime and extra duty.

Overtime is on-duty extra hours paid by the department for things like checkpoints and special patrols.

Extra Duty is off-duty extra hours paid for by private dollars for police presence. Such as the dude sitting in front of WalMart.

Legit OT (which counts towards retirement) is much harder to get than extra duty. But, yeah, there is a history of abusing the system to get huge retirement benefits. Go to NetFlix and look up a 1980's movie with Richard Gere called "Internal Affairs" that is about the LAPD and them manipulating OT and Extra Duty to get big salaries.
