What has led to Ninfa's demise? Update - New Name (Tio Javi's)

My goodness this place is a shell of what it used to be. Went last night and could have mistaken it for Taco Bell if I were eating blindfolded. The beans looked like they were cooked on Friday eveing and sat over the weekend. The rice was hard as a rock and their Plaza dish (2 cheese enchiladas) tasted like it came out of a Lean Cuisine box.
In addition to subpar good, their remodeling of the interior looks tacky.
Anyone been in the last year?

It used to be decent, circa 2004. Great atmosphere too, not so much these days. Overall just very lackluster.

Me neither. Last time I went was for lunch. I was trying to be nice girlfriend and pay and it was wayyyyyyy more than I'm used to paying for Mexican.

You ain't lying. I was shocked to see several dishes over $18. Like Cantina Laredo prices with the quality of Taco Bell.

Haven't been since 2001.
Went to one in Houston last summer, and it was awesome.

Ninfa's was franchised out and then the original firm went bankrupt. All the franchises have gone to shite. They're essentially money makers that sacrifice on food quality.
The only one worth going to is the Original Ninfa's in Houston because the people that bought it, Legacy Restaurants, decided to focus on keeping the food the same. They have upgraded the facility, which was needed, and brought in a couple local bar owners/partners to make it more than just a food destination...all of this has brought increased price, of course.

Sounds a bit incredulous.

The simple answer is that Coyote Blues opened and showed them what incredible Mexican food truly was.

My moms favorite restaurant growing up. Back when piñatas covered the ceilings, it was a wonderful place to go eat with my family. The remodel killed the vibe of the place and the food is middle of the mall bullshite now. It's unfortunate because it's a great setup and was once a great place in BR. Reading this thread makes me

I really miss what used to be in that space, Fat Tuesdays. In the mid '80's I was a regular there and knew the bar tender Ashleigh well. Miss those free drinks.
I ate at Ninfa's in 2003 or so and was not impressed in the least. Never went back.
Mexican is the last type of food I go out for as it seems that every joint sources the same crappy food and you wind up smelling like the place after you leave.

Only reason I eat Mexican is for chips and salsa, and margs. Love them both dearly
