Why hasn't the Great City of Baton Rouge annexed Gardere?

Just wondering.

is it once more time for my wistfully nostalgic essay on the old Gardere?

Many moons ago white folks lived there.

Give us your malls. Your casinos. Your huddled masses of revenue streams. But keep that shite.

I remember Gardere. The nice Gardere, with affordable housing for LSU students and young married couples in a well-maintained, safe neighborhood.
In the late '80s I lived near Gardere. It was perfect for students -- on the bus line to LSU, and there was a Piggly Wiggly grocery store at the corner of Gardere and Burbank. It was especially good for student couples struggling to work and attend school. I visited people there a few times -- I don't recall any complaints. And of course any time I went there I always felt perfectly SAFE.
In the early 90s I left BR and didn't return for about 10 years. When I came back I was talking with a friend and the subject of Gardere came up. Remembering it from my student days, I talked about what a nice student area it was.
"Are you kidding?", he said, and proceeded to tell me what had happened to the area, including a friend of his from church going there to minister -- and getting stabbed.
Later we were driving around and came to the intersection of Burbank and Gardere.
What had been a great place -- affordable, safe, on the LSU bus line and with a Piggly Wiggly for convenient shopping -- was now a slum. The Piggly Wiggly was gone and the shopping center deserted.
I couldn't believe my eyes. I asked my friend what the hell had happened.
He replied simply, "Section 8".

I remember I went to Shreveport several years ago when GPS wasn't very "smart" and I was looking for my hotel on MLK. I didn't realize the main Highway is also named MLK and the GPS had me driving around in the hood.

Perhaps all the do-gooders and mid-Towners need to move in and revitalize the area?

No shortage of gentrification opportunities.

I lived on Gardere in a 4 plex for a year, then spent a coupe years in another 4 plex on Coy, just a couple blocks off Gardere. This was in late 80s. Shopped at the Piggly Wiggly all the time. Made many trips to the Fast Trak burger joint.
There were lots of students in the area, with a few poor folks mixed in. I never experienced any crime problems or heard about any. That said, I knew not all my neighbors were Angels, so I always kept a pistol on the coffee table or by my bed.
Used to visit a little bar on Gardere near a convenience store. Can't recall the name.
It was decent area for a poorer/cheaper student. There were better apt areas in BR, but they cost a bit more.

One day people will say that black people once lived in Garden, but they killed each other until there was none left.

As a freshman in 1983 I rented a townhouse at Gardere and GRSI. It was a brand new town house and a very WASP area/environment. I went back in 2008 to see the old place and thought I might get killed. It felt worse than South Chicago and the 9th ward back in the day. I was shocked at how fast it declined.
