We all know Mett, Hill, Landry, and Beckham put up great stats last season. They are all also making one hell of an impact in the NFL.
Seeing the how well they have transitioned to the NFL brings up a few questions.
With that kind of talent, did LSU underachieve in 2013?
Could Cam really have helped them grow that much last year to have them NFL ready?

My hope is that the team didn't underachieve and they grew that much over the season. If I'm right here, then Cam and staff really are that good and sets this team up very nicely for the next couple of years.

We have seen a ton of growth across the team. Some positions we hoped for more growth, some didn't get enough action to see if they have grown or not.

Either way, seeing the success those guys are having the NFL certainly makes the wheels start moving.

Defense was the main reason for the losses last year with exception of Ole Miss where Mett threw it up for grabs and caused the deficit. The d was decimated will all the underclassmen that left that year. Had we returned most of that defense the offense was good enough to make a championship run

Was LSU the only SEC that had NFL talent last year?

I bet we wouldn't have had the defections in 2012 if they thought the offense would actually be good in 2013.

Defense was horrendous. Last year's Offense paired with any other defense from the previous 4 years or so would have been an insanely good team.

edit: i think even if only Kevin Minter had stayed another year, we'd have been 12-1.

2013

The one year our defense takes a step back the offense has a real identity.

ETA: Holy shite... at least five (six if Foster doesn't play) LSU rookies are starting in the NFL this week. On offense. Mett, OBJ, Jarvis, Hill, Trai Turner, and maybe Blue.

Most have dreams to play in the NFL. Really only one reason to come back for your senior year and that is to win a championship. 2012 defense looked pretty frustrated having to carry us during that season. I wouldn't be surprised one bit if they lacked the confidence that the offense would pull its weight in 2013.

Why doesn't Bama have the same amount of early entrants? They have equal talent. I think it comes down to their players believe they have a good chance to compete/win a title.

Yes the defense took a step back last year. Some of you guys just go off feel versus looking at reality. I felt the same way, but if you look at the stats in all games and in SEC games guess what?

The defense was ranked higher than the offense nationally AND in the SEC. FACT, Look it up, it is not difficult.

I keep hearing how the 2013 offense set all of these records and the defense sucked in 2013 every other day on here for 2013.

Don't get me wrong, I would love for the 2014 offense to be close to the 2013 offense because it is not remotely close.

This phenomena maybe because LSU's offense has not been good in recent years.

We play in the SEC of course our offense isn't gonna be ranked great. They have schools out there that are putting up 50 a game on nobodies week in and week out. We were one of the best offenses and our defense wasn't near what it was. Our takeaways have dropped so much. From 2010-2012 when the ball was thrown down the field, our defense looked like they were the receiver on the play. We have athletes, we just don't have the phenoms anymore that we did.

do you mean in 2012?

because it is hard to say 3000+ yard passers 2 1000+ yard receivers, and a 1000+ yard rusher underachieved.

LSU had a great offense and poor defense last year. This year, we have the opposite. It is hard to put them both together these days. LSU has been able to do that more than many others.

I'm sure Cam and Chavis going against each other in practice everyday keeps everyone on their toes. Already being talented coaches, I'm sure competing against each other every day makes both a better coach. Despite the negativity here, they really have made rapid progress over the past six weeks and I look forward to it continuing.

Ok tigerclaw10, perhaps you didn't note than in the SEC the 2013 defense was ranked higher than the 2013 offense. I tried to highlight with "AND".

Our DBs this year are perhaps the strength of the team or close, but I'll admit they were weaker than the 2010-2012 group. They were elite though the last two years.

I never said the 13 offense underachieved(best one in many years) just stating facts.

You guys keep posting this like it means something. The LSU offense finished 24th in the nation in SCORING OFFENSE. That means that 23 other teams, that don't have 5 NFL starters this weekend, scored more points than LSU.

I'm not calling the 2013 offense bad, but it wasn't "record breaking". Even if you look at just 2013 (not all time), it was good. Good not great, unless you call 24 teams in the country great.

We lost 5 DL (all four starters), Kevin Minter, Eric Reid, and Tharold Simon before 2013. We were decimated in the front 7 and half of our secondary was gone.

Before 2014, we lost our QB, RB, 3 of our top 4 WRs, and an OL player.

Who do you think would have actually stayed an extra year on defense?

Mingo and Reid both had excellent draft grades and weren't returning.

Bennie Logan? Ok, I'll give you that one but he actually got a good draft grade and is doing great in the pros currently.

Mathieu obviously could not have returned.

Montgomery? I'm not even sure the coaches even wanted him back based on the rumors of his work ethic, which people assume is why he went from a projected first-rounder to a third round pick.

Simon and Wing had moufs to feed and were entering the draft no matter what.

I can't think of any more defensive underclassmen since both Minter and Edwards were seniors.

I have no idea but Bama keeps plenty of guys. I think dangling the possibility of a national champion ring in front of their face makes the decision harder.
