As for the OP, never pay for virus protection. Are they going to reimburse you for taking it to a local shop to clean up? No? Why pay for the service then.

Use the free version of AVG, Avast, or MSE and keep the free version of malwarebytes up to date. 2 other free products that are useful to remove virus and malware is ADWcleaner and RogueKiller. All of those programs can be downloaded for free at bleepingcomputer.com

Well, the number of active malware for OSX is minuscule compared to that for Windows. So you almost have to work at it to have a problem, like use pirated software ( and even that is unlikely ).

Has AVG improved? Because many years ago I recall it being a nagging, intrusive resource hog.

For prevention, Windows 8/8.1's native security is more than sufficient. And I am torrenting movies, music, games, and software constantly.
