Most of the Croatians in Louisiana seem to have names that end in "vich". Are they all full of it?
Full of what?

There are many ethnic Serbs who live in Croatia and probably have Croatia connections after they immigrate to the U.S. but the "vich" part of the family name is Serbian based, not Croatian, and means "son of."

Croatian names frequently end in "ich," without the 'v' such as Tomich (Tomic') and Babich (Babic').

When I worked in Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia right after the Dayton Accord was signed to end the last Balkan War, how the surname ended was often my only clue which ethnic group the person I was dealing with came from. That was important because things were still tense between the ethnic groups.

I'm sure you remember that both Croatia and Serbia were part of the country of Yugoslavia before they broke apart so it was common for the various ethnic groups to live in another part of Yugoslavia. The war relocated many persons of each group back to their original region or even forced some to leave the area all together.

Cvitanovich is ethnically Croatian, not Serbian. They came from the island of Hvar in the Adriatic Sea, they had been there hundreds of years before immigrating here. The odds of them having Venetian blood is exponentially greater than having any Serbian lineage.
