re: What if Sumlin gave up on Kyle Allen after his first start?

This is a valid point. Harris was an early enrollee like Allen. Even if Allen got his chance because Hill was suspended, at least you can see how he has improved with more playing time--no reason the same would not apply to Harris.
Precisely.
Game reps are HUGE for development, especially for a youngster learning things. You can only teach so much before it gets applied and learned through game reps. You cant practice what defenses will exactly do.

Hill lost a game 59-0 then got suspended. Jennings has been bad but the situations aren't similar.
Jennings has played like crap almost the entire season, while Harris has played well in spots, outside of the half against Auburn which he continually gets judged (and subsequently benched) over.
Now the situations are very similar, as Sumlin is choosing Allen over Hill. Allen has gotten more chances and much more game development.
It's really a damn shame how the coaches have stunted Harris' development. To just out remove him from the Auburn game and then give up on him the rest of the season after the promise he showed early on is downright pathetic. We have sold out just hoping our QB doesnt make any mistakes, and nothing more. We have effectively neutered the position.

Yeah. You really have to wonder how in the frick playing bad on the road vs AU costs you the job when the guy you replaced stunk at least as bad against freaking New Mexico State!!!!
It's actually sort of insane.

It honestly looked like Jennings had no interest in the game against NMSU. I dont know how else you turn the ball over THREE TIMES in four possessions all on you, against a team that bad.

quote:how long are you guys gonna hold this against Harris? Seriously? It's like you guys can't realize he probably learned from that watching film after the Auburn game and that a whole month has passed since. Did Jennings not botch a play yesterday also?
Harris couldn't even call the plays in the huddle at auburn. Why can't yall understand he isn't ready yet?
Let's keep bashing the true freshman over some mental lapses against a top 5 team in one of the toughest environments in the country but totally ignore the other guy turned the ball over three times at home to New Mexico State. Had the roles been reversed, nobody would want Harris sniffing the field.

The starter was suspended. Your thread sucks and is no way a similar situation at LSU.

This is what I'm saying. Just cuz Harris had one bad start doesn't mean you don't give him a fair shake. A&m did it once they hit 3 losses and I believe it's our time now.
I was fine with everything but if Harris is not the guy here on out its a huge travesty and will cause more of the same next season. Now is the time. Bowl positions are not as important once you are out of a BCS bowl birth.. The future and building towards it now is far more important.

You're not getting it.
"WHAT IF"
The point is not to prop up Sumlin, just to show giving up on a young QB having a bad half is dumb.

Harris gave us nothing in the auburn game. Absolutely nothing. The stakes are too high to risk putting a kid in against SEC competition if he's not ready. What's better than competing against our defense in practice everyday? He'll be fine in the long run but he does need time right now to improve his awarenes. Every SEC team has good defensive players so it wouldn't be fair or necessary to put Harris in that situation and possibly destroy his confidence. The off-season will be the time when he improves the most.

Hill was suspended however Sumlin was already considering the change before hand. He said immediately after their Alabama loss he was considering qb change.
Then when asked recently after the Auburn game if Hill would overtake Allen once his suspension is up.. Sumlin responded by saying Allen is their guy! I absolutely love that. That's something Miles would never say.
Now is the time for LSU to follow suit and not just give up on an elite young talent just because of one bad start. Give the guy the keys now and build for a future.
I'm so sick of seeing LSU play scared to turn the ball over. I'm tired of the lack of confidence in ability to throw the football around when needed.. I want to see LSU have such a great team that they can overcome a couple of interceptions and strike quickly. Like Winston even throws multiple interceptions in a game.. But it doesn't rattle their team.. They overcome it. Nick Marshall as well.
Harris is an elite prospect who has shown greater promise even in limited time.. But I'm tired of Seeing him in such position to fail.. To feel that he has to play near perfect no turnover ball and on such a short lease.. Let the man do his thing. Give him multiple games now. Not one, not two, give him three with complete trust. Now is the time or else we will be in this same shitty qb position next year. It's f-inch absurd otherwise.
Harris is such a talent that Auburn wanted him bad. Had he gone there he'd be sitting behind Nick Marshall for one season and he'd be starting as early as next season. A sophomore or RS freshman.. And you know their offense would be putting up gaudy numbers behind him.

Jim, Sumlin said immediately following the Alabama loss that he was considering the Change at qb.
We will see thanksgiving what happens when Hill is eligible what happens. But he's completely given Allen the he's out guy confidence status.. Something Miles would never do in fear of hurting his other guy.. After the Auburn game Miles even said Jennings was never benched.. I mean come on..

@ Mattwells,
I would not want Sumlin as many have.. I would still take Les as a HC over almost anyone realistically speaking..
But when it comes to handling quarterbacks, I would trust what Sumlin does there.. Again, it will be very interesting to see what he does once Hill's suspension is up. Heck, maybe Hill can transfer to LSU in 2 years if Allen is their guy going forward (being facetious.. I wouldn't want him)

Yep. The only reason Allen played was because Sumlin didn't have a choice. But Rantards never let facts get in the way.
Allen was named the starter prior to the suspension

If Hill wouldn't have gotten suspended then yes, Allen would still be bench riding and not playing.

Then that goes on the coaches not preparing a player. Get him the playbook he can utilize because he has a massive talent advantage over the current guy who cant get it done at all.
Yep.
Not one time did they call a read-option against Auburn -- a play Harris has run effectively this year.

And Harris has looked fine in a handful of other games, why does he continually get judged ONLY in the Auburn game. It's like you, and the coaches, want to forget this guy led 8 straight drives for TDs at one point this year.
It was a pitiful performance. I don't disagree with them going to Jennings the last four games -- we went 3-1.
But Jennings is not next year's solution. I know that much.

Allen was named starter after it was known that Hill would probably be suspended. The official announcement might not have been made, but there were already rumors floating that it was happening before the announcement of Allen at QB.

Do you people just make up shite in your head?
From an A&M beat reporter, "I asked OC Jake Spavital to clarify if Allen beat out Hill in practice. He said yes, Allen won job, didn't start because of Hill suspension."

This is the key. Sumlin has a functional offense with an 18yr old QB.

Meh.
Auburn is putrid defensively. They've been getting burned in the secondary all year long.
On Saturday, it finally caught up with them.
I'll give Sumlin credit in that he finally made the adjustment and started committed to running the football.
