re: Alabama has killed us as a championship calibre program...

Jesus Christ PJ. It wasn't a squib kick. Multiple media interviews, including Shea Dixon, confirmed that the kicker was supposed to kick a touchback. Damn I knew this at midnight last night. There are multiple websites that have video of Miles' presser saying the same thing. Look it up.
If you're gonna shite on the coach, at least get the facts straight.

His choice to do that stupid squib kick was a HORRIBLE choice.

I called in knee-jerk in 2009 and 2010. I mused about it on 10 Jamuary 2012 (you can find the post). I said that I'm beginning to wonder if we'll be able to compete at Bama's level over the next several years. Even then, I didn't imagine that we would be waiting until the end of 2015 for a shot to beat them.
There is nothing knee-jerk about my post. Just think about it a bit more.
It's not knee jerk at all. Clearly the anomaly was 2011, not every other year since 2007. what two things have happened?
1. Nick's players left.
2. Nick moved into our backyard.
LSU will be second to Alabama as long as Saban is there and Miles is here. This has been obvious since 2008. A victory here or there will happen though.

And Saban uses it to his advantage too.
He pulls out those National Championship rings to every recruit, lines them up and says that you will get to play for at least one of these rings during your career with me at AL. Heck - I even won one at LSU.
Heard it from 2 trainers with several recruits that have been present when he did it ........
Sorry but it is very hard to overcome.

I witnessed a conservative offense that's afraid to do anything different, and a team that imploded.
Jennings just isn't good enough.

I've thought about it. I don't think about my team that way. The minute I start believing that they can't improve or compete with other programs then I'll stop watching them play. Call it what you like, but that's how I support the Tigers.
There was a coach that diagnosed the LSU fanbase with catastrophe syndrome. He was correct. It was gone a while, but it's back.

If things continue as they have, you'll be forced to see it sooner or later. Until then, you'll be dealing with the disappointment year after year. I'm not being a condescending dick when I say that I used to be like you. Lot of water over the dam between then and now.

I'd rather expect success and be disappointed by failure than to concede before the game is played.

LSU is basically Georgia. Excellent recruiting, very likeable coach, going to win more than it loses, will play down sometimes, will surprise you by playing great the next. Inconsistent, not good enough to win it all again, but good enough to beat rent a wins and most conference opponents, play in a decent bowl.

How many years have we said this now? Has there ever been a QB out of High School, recruited by a Miles coaching staff, that has performed well?

Last night, think about it, tied game, LSU recovers a fumble inside the Alabama 5 yard line with little time left in the game, and STILL could not close out with a win.
This type of thing has characterized LSU play against 'Bama for a number of recent games, all of which have resulted in losses. The JL pick 6 fest is another example. This team makes too many mistakes to be mistaken for a championship caliber program. That is the long and the short. People on here laud LSU's talent, but talent does not choke. I do not see the talent so much as mistake prone players. Last night only reinforces that view, but I am sure that my perspective is completely warped....

Reluctantly I agree. I hate to put it in writing for others to see, but at this point it's undeniable.
We are good, but need to beat them. We've handed them two straight at home in final minute. No respect will be given unless we beat them.

Ok whatever... Keep making excuses... They should have kicked the ball into the endzone and make Bama go 80 yards....

These last four losses to them have shown us they know how to dominate us, and they also know how to win in the clutch against us. THAT is not an accident. We should've won last night AND we should've won the game in 2012. Both times the gameplan.........regardless of the criticism........was sound enough to win. Yet, we are unable to seal the deal and they put together key drives in the last minute that are the difference in the game. Two years ago I attributed it to having AJ McCarron as their QB. But after watching Sims do the EXACT SAME THING.....after having had a horrible game to that point.......lets me know this is no longer a coincidence.
Meh, Beckwith provided a golden opportunity to the offense with the ball on the 6, then the O promptly squandered it with the penalty, which was plain stupidity, and then settling yet again for a FG in a big game. LSU's offense is not scaring anyone via the pass and making it very difficult to put up 6's. Compound that with the terrible kickoff and they let Bama back in and a senior maximized his opps and LSU's D played to soft the final drive and weren't ready for OT calls. Meanwhile LSU blows a chance at a good gain on 1st and the game was done. 2012 was on Miles and some of the things he tried to pull out of his behind when he didn't need to and the D allowing Yeldon to slip free.
I can't help the current QB weakness, but the offense was obviously much more dynamic with an experienced drop back QB who was immobile. LSU needs a good QB who starts for 3-4 seasons, that would help immensely vs the QB carousel that has been in-play the past few seasons. There is always hope, luck definitely plays a part as well.
What if Beckwith didn't recover the fumble and Bama drove the field for a TD and won? What would the bitching be about then? Weren't only 5 penalties called combined for both teams during regulation? 3-29 for Bama, 2-20 for LSU, refs let the guys play for the most part, abstaining from ticky tack penalities which was a little refreshing.

quote:I made that one adjustment to what you said; BTW, totally agree with you mostly.
now we're in the fight of our lives for a share of second place.
But I don't think it is Alabama that has killed us as a championship calibre program. I think it is a tragic convergence of Alabama (and now Ole Miss, MSU, Auburn, and maybe aTm) having strong coaching, while our coach with a pretty decent record is stuck on coaching LSU teams to play safe, and gameday schemes that are inflexible and unable to win championships versus strong, really strong, teams. Like Alabama, MSU (this year), and Auburn.

Easy to be overly negative. But it is not based in reality.

Glad that I didn't have to start this post because I know there will be some yahoo comments but agree with you 100 percent. For us older Tiger fans, it hit me last night that we haven't seen 4 consecutive losses to Bama since the Bear was coach. I guess as the old saying goes, History has a way of repeating itself.

I agree with the OP, I don't see us beating Bama while Saban is there. We barely beat him the first year or two after he got to Bama when our talent levels were superior to what he had in his stable. I think as far as our QB situation goes, we can't develop a good passing QB because that's not our goal. We don't plan to throw the ball more than 15-20 times a game and you have to throw it more to get better at it!! Seems like Cam is trying to recruit some better drop-back type passers but the last few years have been spent looking for these "dual" threat QB's who end up not being a good runner or passer. Meanwhile, Saban has beaten LSU on college football's biggest game of the regular season 4 straight games, and continues to cherry pick the top 2-3 athletes in our state each year on his way to #1 recruiting classes every single year. Maybe Miles can still feel ok about losing every year to Saban, but if I were him, I would do WHATEVER IT TOOK in the offseason to make the changes necessary to the offensive scheme, QB, etc. in order to beat Bama. If you can beat Bama, you can beat nearly everyone else that you play. It's hard to have both a "good ol boy" and a championship coach at the same time. Usually the nice guys finish somewhere down the line, and the one-track minded maniacs like Saban, Jimmy Johnson, etc. are the ones who truly excel. Depends if you want to win at any cost, or just have a nice guy who wins a lot of games as your head coach.

Seriously? This is what's wrong with LSU fans today ... unrealistic expectations. No one should have been expecting a "dream season" this year.
