1. Low turnout
2. Things have finally gotten so bad that the media is struggling to spin things positively.
3. Minorities, youth, and single women rarely show up for mid-terms, allowing republicans to generally have the advantage.

In 2006 mid-term, Dems picked up 5 Senate seats and 34 House seats.
