Sounds like injector issues. Ours wouldn't throw codes, but a fluid analysis showed fuel. Changed injector sleeves & seals and now runs great*.

*edit to add*

*relative term - it has been rode hard and put up wet more than a few times, but it now runs great compared to how it was running

Have a 2002 freightliner with the 350 cat engine. The problem I'm having is the truck will idle just fine but when you get on the road it kills after about 5-10 minutes and won't restart until it cools for awhile. I've changed out the fuel pump, fuel lines and filters and it still does it.

Any insight is appreciated.

I'll tell you the same thing I tell everyone else on matters like this, get it into your local Cat dealer's shop and have them run diagnostics and troubleshoot the problem.

Having said that, I'm suspicious that your problem may be from your ECM (electric control module) overheating and thus shutting the engine down. Are you in a position where you can get someone to pull the fault codes off the engine? If so post them here and I'll get with our truck engine guys to see what those codes tell us.

ETA: If you can get me the fault codes, I'll also need your engine serial number and engine arrangement number as well. These can be found on the engine ID plate located on either the valve cover or the side of the block. It will look something like this...

Thanks everyone. I'll see if I can pull some codes off it.

I noticed one of the fuel filters was not full

Was this after you'd run it and it shut down?

You work for Caterpillar? I worked for Louisiana Machinery (LA Cat) for about a year right after I got out of the navy.

Yep. Been with them for 20 years, ever since I came off active duty with the Army.

You're not in LA though right? I worked for their offshore division out of Morgan City... worked on crew boats and some platforms out in the Gulf.

Who is the "Service Tool" at your shop? Make damn sure he verifies the current engine settings.

I don't actually work in a shop. I'm an office/on the road person.

I'm there a lot, probably most of the time but I go all over north Alabama and sometimes even south Alabama as well.

You ever eat at the taco truck at the Marathon station in Tarrant? Or at Bama Hot Dog?

I see it out here every day when I'm working in B'ham but have yet to work up the nerve to stop.

It's been years. One thing about his place is you instantly know when someone has just eaten lunch there because they will smell exactly like the 15 year old fryer oil they use in that little hole in the wall. The smell of the place literally saturates whoever goes in there. Really he only good place to eat around there without going over to Gardendale or Trussville is the Cedar House down past ABC Coke.

Cedar House is legit. I just feel like I am taking years off of my life every time I eat there. And I need to stop by ABC and get one of those Friends of Coal stickers all the boys have on their trucks.

Just try to make sure you never look over the cashier's shoulder to the wall behind her or you might accidentally see their heath rating.

The folks at Thompson have (or had) a ton of those things. I even noticed a Friends of Coal bracelet just this morning while in a meeting.

When in the area, hit up Sammy's sandwich Shop over by the airport. Outstanding burgers. If you've never been, you can thank me later.

Will do. I don't think it exists any longer but did you ever eat at a place called "V-Jay's on the Runway" over next to the airport? The original one burned years ago, they move it to another spot next to the airport and it burned as well. They made a mean Reuben sammich.
