That philosophy works when the defense plays outstanding football and allows the offense time to wear the opponent down and/or make a big play. LSU's defense did just that Saturday night. The problem is that it (probably unnecessarily) puts a ton of pressure on the defense to not just be good, but be perfect, and makes many games (some probably unnecessarily) rest on a razor's edge in the 4th.
The frustrating part is that when LSU has been behind and forced to open up the passing game they have generally delivered. See ('10 Bama; '10 UT; '10 UF; '12 Bama; '12 OM; '13 Ark; '14 Wisc.; '14 UF). It begs the question as to why with so much talent at the WR spot does LSU wait until they are backed into a corner to rely on the passing game? LSU has been great in the 4th under Les. But it also makes you ask if LSU would open things up a bit more in quarters 1-3, would they have to be so good (and sometimes lucky) in the 4th?
