Versatility they are miles apart. 7mm-08 is basically a low-recoil .308 that's better suited for lighter game at longer ranges. .308 will cover everything 7mm-08 will do, and more, at the expense of more recoil.

There aren't many common hunting cartridges that are more similar than the two. He's not exactly deciding between a .243 and a .300 magnum.
