Drew Brees, sure he's a nice guy, but I don't shite about him and all he gives are non substantive answers
And yet I still follow him because...

o you think they are pissed because he is not marching on Selma Alabam, not because he hangs out with white guys and has cultivated an image that appeals to the majority of Americans and not a smaller African American sub-population?
That would seem more plausible to me

Why would he march on Selma?

it's possible, but you can't tell me he is the only fake QB in the league. I don't hear talk about mutiny on any other team.
I guess we really just don't know.

sorry guys don't get passes like ruth or mantle
they all put up with this bullshite, and they keep up the nice guy persona so they can appeal to people and get endorsements, but I'll always appreciate guys like steve smith who don't give two shits about that and play balls to the wall
also, just knowing how fricked our perceptions of so many things are, it wouldn't surprise me to find out steve smith is probably more "normal" than guys like brees or wilson

I don't think that's it, I think people like to relate...what's so funny to me is no one can relate to Leonardo dicaprio but everyone will line up to see his movie, I just don't understand why people want their athletes to be relatable.
who cared that randy moss is a pot smoking gangsta wannabe redneck who may or may not take plays off? When he was on the field he was crazy fun to watch...same goes for Adrian Peterson. the guy sucks on so many levels, there isn't really anything likeable about him at all going all the way back to "nfl players are slaves" but I'm going to watch him and have fun every time he's on the field unless he's smoking the saints or killing my fantasy team

No that's medias/white perception
Maybe you have a different perspective than some black athletes from Compton. Is that possible or are you saying all of y'all think alike, since we're generalizing things.
That's very possible, but then that would fall mainly into a class discussion (where is SFP when you need him).
In my experiences it was always non blacks painting the narrative for what "black" should be--what they saw on TV. My opportunities and experiences always begged to differed.
One thing I know is tbis-- we are not monolithic

I don't get how people call Wilson "fake". I could see if he puts on an act whenever he does interviews and then doesn't back it up in his personal life, but I've never seen or heard a bad thing about him ever. He's a genuinely good guy and backs it up with his actions. He does a ton in this community. I know that there's a Saints fan on here too that lives in WA that has had a personal experience with Wilson at a football camp that backs up everything Wilson stands for... and that was away from cameras and media.

I think there is an element of truth to this, I notice some people "black it up" when black guys come around, but black people really are the ones promoting the stereotype...just look at the numbers across the board especially with consumer behavior. Black people aren't the unfortunate victims of misconception or stereotypes.

The ones who are white, like David Duke, get marginalized and ridiculed. The ones who are black, like Sharpton, Jackson, Holder, etc. get legitimized.

Wilson comes across as very fake and I believe that is the issue. The whole not black enough thing is a very poorly worded attempt to discribe his contrived persona.
That's exactly what it is. Some of the players likely just don't know how to articulate themselves.
Posted on 10/22/14 at 3:17 pm to lsupride87
I don't think it's about being "Black enough" more so than some of the players may feel Wilson lacks integrity and they may not know how to properly articulate themselves. Sadly, even Richard Sherman has been tabbed not "Black enough" by some. It's all ridiculous. Black is Black. The end. It's just some Blacks have experiences that differ from most other Blacks. But, that doesn't mean anyone's experience is less than or greater than anyone else's experience.

Nowadays, I don't know anyone, white or black, who take Sharpton/Jackson seriously, so I'm not sure about that comparison.

quote:I wouldn't know because I don't think I've been exposed to him anymore than I have some players I've never even heard of...but I think the overwhelming majority of "stars" in the NFL are about as fake as they come. people read too much into how much a guy celebrates or his post game interviews and pressers (and commercials)
I don't get how people call Wilson "fake"
star athletes have always lacked personality since I was a tiny child. Some break the mold (shaq)

Posted by Fox Mulder he perceives racial elements that aren't there. It's like he doesn't want to acknowledge realities...like the college kid who killed his family, everyone was disgusted and wanted to see this kid killed. Because it's so strange and abnormal, DOES NOT HAPPEN EVERYDAY, people were discussing anti social personality disorder and he thought that was evidence of a double standard he clearly has racial insecurities, but with that said, on non racial matters I think he is a good poster,
There was absolutely no racial element there
Even I know that. But what I was pointing at is how the posters were quicker to reason out his transgressions as opposed to the kid who does a drive by. That's labeled "culture" and the victims are deemed as "worthy of being shot".
That's what I was pointing out. Our implicit characterization of things paints black as "bad."
