Nice article.
I have sat in that place for many years and watched football games. It surely has a history of great games.

I have both laughed and cried on that field

for some reason no matter whether we're playing Rummel, Bonnabel, EJ, or Grace King, we never play well on that field
even when we were good
how can anyone forget the epic 7-0 semifinal in 2006 when Rummel got shut out in the freezing cold by Sulphur
or the 2003 Rummel/Holy Cross game where Rummel came back from 20-0 down at halftime to win in the last 30 seconds
the EJ St. Aug game in 2012 when Leonard Fournette got a late personal foul penalty playing defense and EJ upset them
or the 2013 EJ Neville semifinal won on a last second field goal by the Metairieites

Evangel's 41-10 defeat over Rummel's undefeated regular-season team in 2001 state semifinals.
Roth has been a part of nine undefeated district championship teams at Rummel, including six as its head coach. And in 2001, that was the case. The Raiders were preparing for a playoff game against a little school, but a powerhouse up in Shreveport. Evangel was coming to town for the teams' first ever playoff game, and the home-field advantage, Roth said, allowed his team to take a 10-9 into the locker room at halftime. Evangel scored 32 unanswered in the second half, but Roth still recalls the atmosphere at that playoff game at Yenni. "The first time we played Evangel in the state semis, we pulled up to the stadium at 5:30 and it was standing room only," Roth said. "That was something the kids couldn't even imagine. Evangel was a small school, but it was like the circus came to town. People were standing around by the scoreboard an hour and a half before kickoff. It was packed. To leave at halftime with the score 10-9 with a chance to go the state championship was great."
I remember going to this game before I went to Rummel, but had a brother in the band so I went. I was maybe 14?
That atmosphere was unreal and I'm certain it is top 3 in crowd capacity for that stadium. Both sides were packed in and there were people lined up all along every fence opening behind both scoreboards.
Even though Rummel was waxed by Booty and company, it is a great memory.

did Evangel really bring that many fans all the way from Shreveport?

No, I distinctly remember every time they scored they had a group on the visitor side of about 75-100 people stand up and cheer.
I think this game drew interest too back then because of Evangel obliterating teams and the incredible run of success they were on.

Joe Yenni sounds like a Kenner yat name, for sure...

Remember it well. He ran a kick back and they just pitched it to him a few times on offense, long td runs.

Not in Yenni but the Halloween night game against Jesuit in '03 at Gormley was unreal. Year before I started at Rummel. The dude was my fricking hero after that game.

Yea he had like 7 carries for 200 yards

Couldn't have happened against a more appropriate school too. I remember Steltz had long arse hair that was against Rummel's grooming policy but you know Kenny Flair wasn't gonna tell him shite.
But I digress from the original purpose of this thread.

I was a freshman at Jesuit at the time and was at the game. We were up on 14-3 at the half, and then Roth decides to move Steltz to halfback in the second half. I'm still trying to forget about that game.
