I had one of these when I lived in Dallas. You skinny slats seem to have too much space in between them. How wide are those slats and how wide are the gaps?
Also, what is direction of the sun in relation to the direction of the skinny slats?

Slats are 1x4's, with a 6 or 8 inch gap.

Well, it depends on the time of day. Noon, it's right over head. Morning, the sun comes up at the front of the house, so no issue.
Later in the day (afternoon) the sun travels to the back of the house. Sun light runs parallel at times.
