Jesus essentially advocated for separation of church and state. Render unto Caesar, etc. And I have no fricking clue how a government can live up to Jesus's standard of forgiveness. It's not possible. The establishment of state Christianity in Rome and elsewhere was the beginning of the end. It's been culturally rationalized ever since.

I believe if I am attacked, I should defend myself. I believe criminals should pay for their crimes. I believe war is sometimes justified and necessary. These beliefs are incompatible with the word of Christ. I'm just honest enough to see that.

It's pretty much impossible to be a functioning member of society and adhere to the bible 100%. If it were possible, people wouldn't need forgiveness.

I don't believe the the NT advocates for no state punishment, only that individuals should forgive.

War is clearly advocated for in the Bible, and given that Jesus acknowledged the OT as infallible, he must have believed that.

I do agree that Jesus seems to advocate against self-defense, though.
