Why so late? I remember having homework every night at that age....but my parents made that be the first thing we did when we got home. You wanted to go play with friends or watch tv....do your homework first.

I wouldn't have lasted a week in this Gulag-environment.

4 hours of homework every night is way too much.

Well, for she doesn't get home until about 4:30-4:45 and she's usually so damn tired when she gets home from school we give her some downtime to take a nap before we start on her homework for the night. She hardly ever gets an opportunity to go outside and play.

This was my life as a kid, too. But I don't remember having to do hours and hours of homework. I think I'd get home after school, eat my Oreo's and milk, then do my homework and was out playing with my friends until the street lights came on.

I was in public school and don't remember having a ton to do, but my buddy down the street went to Catholic school and his schoolbag was always loaded down and he always had hours of homework.

Why so late?

What about extracurriculars? Kids learn more important lessons there than they do in the classroom.

Regardless of when she starts. 4 hours of homework is absurd for 4th grade. My kid is in second and we probably spend about an hour a night.

As for starting at 5:30 if both parents work that is pretty standard. My kid starts around 5:30 because that's when we get home.

You didn't have that much homework. So do your homework as soon as you get home and go play at 8:00?

Just stop it. He is saying that his 4th grader has 6 hours of homework a night. That is after being in school for 8 hours a day. If you work 14 hours a day, you are griping about it.

We should not ask 4th graders to work 14 hours a day.

My kids go through the same thing. It is insane. They are in school all day long and are exhausted when they come home. They rest for a bit, get something to eat, and then are up until 10 or 11 every night doing homework. I left my 3rd grader at the table the other night doing worksheets of mindless repetition. He smiled at me and got back to work. It was 10:30pm. I couldn't do it for him and he understood what to do, but I had to get to bed. I was exhausted.

Teachers/Schools think that they are teaching with all of this stuff, but in reality, they are stealing childhoods. Stop blaming the parents. Most parents work hard all day and try to provide a life for their kids. I am not doing my kid's 3rd grade homework for him. But, the amount that he is assigned is insane.

My 7th grader had straight A's with all 99's or 100's in every class. He brought home an 89 in math because he accidentally left one of his many assignments at home one day and brought it first thing the next day. The teacher gave him a ZERO even though he completed it perfectly and it affected his grade and dropped him to a B. Back in my day, she would have dropped him a letter grade for being a day late. He was disappointed but I told him I was proud of him, don't worry about it, and learn from it for next time. It is the second B that he has ever made in his life. In my opinion, the teacher is a moron. But, whatever.

So, stop with the sanctimonious "what time does she start" stuff. You don't know what you are talking about.
