So a year ago, Ed Bolian claimed to beat Alex Roy's cross country record in a time of 28h 50min. Today, he has released the GPS tracking info. The guy is an idiot but must have balls of steel.

More interesting than the group's highest possible speed, however, is their sustained speed figures. Although the highest speed limit along Ed's route is 75 mph, the crew spent a whopping 25 hours – or nearly 88 percent of the trip – above 80. They spent 15 hours above 100. They spent four-and-a-half hours above 120. And they spent 96 minutes – more than an hour and a half – above 130 miles per hour.

Good thing he didn't have to travel down I95 through DC; otherwise, he might still be there.

Word. Traveling from DC through Fredericksburg, VA on 95 is a nightmare.

Bio for the author of the story:
quote:
@DougDeMuro is the author of Plays With Cars. He owned an E63 AMG wagon and once tried to evade police at the Tail of the Dragon using a pontoon boat. (It didn't work.) He worked as a manager for Porsche Cars North America before quitting to become a writer, largely because it meant he no longer had to wear pants. Also, he wrote this entire bio himself in the third person.

Wow. That is completely insane. How do you avoid the police for that long, over multiple states?

I remember reading about this in Car and Driver, I believe.
They used the CL55 as it was a full size car, and could beef up the rear suspension and add auxiliary fuel tanks (for obvious reasons). They also had a plethora of radar monitoring/jamming/cop detection devices in the car, in addition to their own GPS and monitoring equipment.

Scanner, jammers, radar detectors, CB, light cutoff switch etc. Hell, when Alex Roy did it, he used a spotter plane.
Inside of the CL55.
