No word on when it will go to vote, but it will be on a ballot in the near future and only the residents that live in the boundary lines will vote on it.

With all the business annexing to Baton Rouge, the residents will get the shite taxed out of them if this passes. Property tax will go through the roof

Interesting. I wish the organizers the best of luck and I think a new city and school district would be beneficial to those of is that live here. The people will have the option of taxing themselves for better roads, schools, etc. if they want them. We'll also have the freedom to make the same mistakes Baton Rouge did if that's what is desired.

I didn't think they could continue to collect signatures after they've submitted the petition. I guess they can.

This dude is such a flippin' idiot. If was a supporter of the movement, I would have demanded a new spokesperson months ago. He is nothing but an overgrown child.

I don't know all the logistics and specifics of the whole thing, but I do live in the St. George area, and I do have a kindergarten-age son. I want him to have the best education possible, and that's why I am for the proposed new city. I just don't understand the whole bussing-in from other parts of the city.

It's still not a sure thing that it will come to a vote, and it definitely won't be anytime very soon.

First of all, there is currently only about a 4% cushion on their number of votes. If more than 4% get invalidated, then they'll have to collect more signatures.

Second of all, there are going to be lawsuits over all this. Buddy Caldwell may have said that, in his opinion, the annexations don't invalidate the petition, but that's not legally binding at all. With the casino being annexed, the proposed city is now losing over 20% of its proposed revenue and several square miles of area. At the very least, lawsuits over this will delay things.

It's interesting that the petition submitted this morning has 18,200 signatures when back on August 25, nearly two months ago, the organizers said they had 17,750 signatures at that point. LINK

So they have only added an additional 450 signatures in just under two months when they said in July they collected 200 signatures in a week. LINK

Plus on August 25 Rainey said they were going to collect a total of 20,000 signatures, or 1,750 more signatures than they had in August, before they submitted the petition.

Of course at that time Rainey also said they hoped to turn the petition in by the first of October with 20,000 signatures.

How can anyone have confidence in what Rainey and the SG organizers say?

I'm sure Mr. Sprock will be here soon to tell us...

A nola.com article this afternoon says SG only needs 16,500 signatures to equal 25% of the registered voters in SG.

LINK
quote:

Since the campaign to incorporate the city of St. George in East Baton Rouge Parish began last fall, the number of signatures organizers needed to get the issue on a ballot was said to be somewhere around 18,000.

On Monday, though, East Baton Rouge Parish Registrar of Voters Elaine Lamb said her office had run a new report, and found the number of signatures needed is actually 16,500.

The registrar's office counts about 65,998 registered voters in the area proposed for St. George, Lamb told NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune on Monday. Municipal incorporations require supporters to get signatures from one-fourth of the registered voters in the area, which in this case would be 16,500.

Is it possible the annexed areas have almost 4,000 registered voters living in them and that's what made the number of registered voters in SG decrease? That doesn't sound possible.

I'm a 25 yr old voter who purchased a house in the proposed St. George city limits back in January. My wife and I spent about six months looking at the pros and cons of the new city, and the incorporation of Central and Zachary.

When it was all said and done, we decided to sign the petition and donate to the effort.

I believe that a small city can be governed more effectively than a large city. We moved down here from a suburb of Detroit, Michigan. I have seen firsthand how a city with a large area can be easily mismanaged, leading to flight, infrastructure decay, and declining property value. EBR is three times the size of the city of Detroit.

I hope that if the measure passes, it will benefit both the city of Baton Rouge and the city of St. George.

Has the revised number of signatures being 16,500 been mentioned yet in this thread?

I still don't understand why people who don't live within the proposed area care about this. Why are you so dead set against your neighbors deciding if they want to create their own city or not? Its the choice of the people who live in that area, not yours.
