If Huey Long had been President

How different would our nation's history have been if Huey Long had not been assassinated and was elected President back in the mid thirties? I know he was a controversial figure, but from what I've read about him, he was the real deal, and there probably will never be another charismatic firebrand like Huey Long. From reading about his policies and what he strove to change in our state, he was all about the working man and the poor, and he essentially had a "Robin Hood" mentality, to take from the rich to help the poor, which was a very noble and respectable thing.
So what do y'all think, if Huey Long had become President, would the United States as we know it today be drastically different?

As long as he got to keep the lion's share...yeah.

Huey Long created the concept of 'free lunch' in public school. In the early 1950s I brought a nickel to school every day for lunch. This was for the milk. I guess the dairies weren't getting a subsidy. But the food was free. No means testing. No food stamps. Just free for everyone.
His political methods still work today.

Anybody who attributes the "Robin Hood" mentality to any politician/government entity should be forced to go back and restart their education at the third grade level.
Or, at a bare minimum, be forced to gain a better understanding of the Robin Hood legend.

Bet you dollar to doughnuts he was killed accidentally by his own bodyguards.

Huey Long was all about Huey Long. He was a shakedown artist, and this state's just finally recovering from the damage he and his brother( and a few other governors)did to this State.

He financed his "Robin Hood" by extorting money from businesses that wanted to come to the state, taking a large cut for himself.

My family knew the Longs. My house always had Long stories to tell when I was a kid under Earl Long, but, we talked about Huey a lot. After seeing Obama for 6 years and what he's done to the economy and the country, I'm not optimistic about what Huey would have done. Free school lunches is well known, but, I think since Huey had predominately Democrats then, he would have passed many taxes on businesses and owners, which would have been spent on giveaways and created semi-socialism and a bad economy. Fewer taxes collected , deficits, debt, bonds, higher unemployment, and inflation. We might not have had the economy in 1941 to mfg. war materials to win a war over Japan and Germany. Huey would have been in office in the late 30's and maybe 1941 also. I liked Huey and Earl, but they did not have policies for growth and full employment, at a time in WW2 that we needed a growth economy.

He would have been assassinated as President. I don't think he ws a fan of the Federal Reserve.

We would be a better country. We would be like Sweden or Norway or Denmark. A social-welfare state with a high standard of living but higher taxes but still an advanced country.
Minorities would have gotten civl rights much sooner without the white reactionary politicians and George Wallace would have never gone racist and he would have become president and been a good one.

I think you unknowingly hit the nail on the head when you said "working" man, but also Louisiana being a fairly rural state; Huey was probably going after the vote for his own personal gain as mentioned by other posters.

Robinhood took from the government and gave to the poor, but don't let facts contaminate the troll

Theft using the threat of violence, death, imprisonment and oppression is never a noble or respectable thing. It is a grotesque act committed by the least noble for the least respectable reasons. I weep for your stupidity.
