The problem you "dropped it on purpose" people are having is that you're missing that the sports story is, ultimately, Kit's story. It is a Cinderella story - she only got on the train because of Dottie. Dottie was already a local superstar - the fact that she got the limelight in a little bigger market (Girl's baseball?) was only a little change.
Kit went from supporting role (even on the Peaches) to superstar leader of her team. She continually improved throughout the show.
Dottie and Jimmie were the human stories - Dottie of realizing family was more important than baseball and Jimmy of second chances and committing to something.
The movie is not about Kit. Kit is merely a catalyst for Dottie's acceptance of what she really values in life.
I mean this all sounds nice, but...

But the sports story was, essentially, Kit's story. The narrative makes complete sense that she wins the game, fair and square, against her older sister.
This is not Kit's journey. This is not her film. This is precisely why the choice at the end is Dottie's choice. It's the hero's choice. The hero's sacrifice.

Shabam. Dottie was not the hero Kitt deserved, but the one she needed then.
