Yeah, Whitlock is a gas bag. I don't get why people always preface their criticism of him with "he's a good writer". He's not. Whitlock only cares about his own cult of personality.
Simmons is really good at big picture ideas. I think he's well-suited to a more managerial role with only the occasional column. I do think he's a lot like Tony Kornheiser in the sense both are outsized egos who have a similar belief that this should all be fun. I think Tony K is a better writer, by far, but Tony K couldn't put together something like 30 for 30.
I think ESPN is the only place Simmons can be Simmons, Fox will not pour the same resources into him and give him the same branding opportunity. Grantland is the best thing he's ever done, and he couldn't do it at Fox. Besides, those writers will not all follow him out the door.

When he was with the Star Whitlock was a must read. He did write things most did not agree with but he was bringing attention to a subject. I think he is very good at being an Opinion writer. He does not claim to be a unbiased person, never has never will.
I also think Simmons is a good writer, just a notch below Whitlock. The two writers who I think are definitely in it for themselves and are just unbearable are Lupica and Ryan. I have never liked their style or points.

It is a mistake to consider Simmons future will be a reflection of his past
Simmons has become an Exec Prod in Hollywood. The game has changed for him.
He can do his own podcast (and own it), continue to Produce TV and movies (and own his work) and pick and choose his writing spots
Owning your products, not just A salary is how you get real wealth and clout in entertainment

I would agree. Their resources are unmatched. Fox, NBCSN would be silly moves for a forward thinker like Simmons. They want to be ESPN. It ain't gonna happen
I do think if SBNation has reasonable $$ to pay him and some key writers, they make a lot of sense. He's basically the spirit animal of that site and would have freedom to do whatever he wants. And the parent company has experience building around personalities with Vox, which is basically news Grantland. He'd lose access and unparalled platform, but all the BS that comes with working for a corporate monolith
He can easily find a partner for the sports documentaries- Netflix could be an easy option.
Leaving comes down to how much risk does he want. Is he willing to take a pay cut? Does he think his fans will stay with him?
