Did they get 200lbs of meat or was the hanging weight 200lbs. You're generally charged by hanging weight for a side of beef which means if you pay $5/lb that's not only for the meat you take home but for the scraps, fat and bones that end up in the trash.

I bought a side of beef, ONCE.

we used to buy a cow and have it butchered to split with some other folks...one day we crunched out how much we were actually paying for it and never did it again...

if you are doing it so that you can feed the cow for a little while and get good, clean beef, that is ok...but if you are looking to save money, you come out better buying your beef at the store...

get yourself a freezer and shop the sales if you want to minimize your spend...

Which category of healthier? From a macros point of view, chicken is king of the farm meats. From the chemical side, I'm sure there are better

This

I got 90/10 ground beef from Albertsons when they had a $2.99/lb sale about 2 months ago. I got about 50 lbs and only have a few 5lb packs left in the freezer.

We aren't likely to see those incredible beef sales for a while though. I think I got that the last time it dipped below $3.00

Even when we raised cattle, I NEVER understood people wanting to do that. Why buy a 1/2 calf, whatever, and end up with crap that you won't cook, possibly. Buy your meat fresh, as you need it.

If you don't work for kids, food, and shelter, wtf for? Cut out some recreational activities instead.

Really?

In 3 oz pork (loin) :
169 calories
8 grams of fat
23 grams of protein

In 3 oz chicken (breast):
94 calories
1 gram of fat
20 grams of protein

I caught some round steaks on sale for 2.50 an lb. Bought 12lbs kept half of it whole and ground up the rest. If you know what to look for in pricing and quality you can save a few bucks.

Went to a replacement heifer sale a couple of weeks ago. 200 bred heifers averaged 2600 a pop. The big sellers were 4 black baldies that brought 3200 each.

Good lawd!

Couldn't be a worse time for me. May be getting a shot at 150 acres of pasture and don't have the money to fill it.

The prices will hold for several years. You can go buy 3,4 and 5 year old bred cows for less than 2k, most are around $1500, 300-400 lb calves are bringing 1000-1200 bucks. You'll almost have that original cow paid for after one calf. The second calf you'll be even or ahead. After that you've probably got 3-5 more calves left and you can sell the cow at the end. That's one pretty viable option to getting cows. Although, none of that is certain and can fall through in a heart beat. So take this advice with a grain of salt. I myself have been looking at getting some bred brangus heifers, while expensive now, if the market holds, the first calf will almost pay for the cow. Although it's a huge gamble.

Not even sure I'll get the land yet but I'm not afraid to start slow and build a herd with quality pure breeds.

I'm thinking about getting 7-8 feeder calves next Spring and selling them off for people looking to buy full or halves. Prices are insane right now. May start with 3-4.

ahh the guy who has a vendetta with me. its very arguable but i have sources as well.

beef
There are 348 calories in 1 cup of cooked, shredded Beef.
Calorie breakdown: 63% fat, 0% carbs, 37% protein.

pork
There are 363 calories in 1 cup of cooked, diced Pork.
Calorie breakdown: 58% fat, 0% carbs, 42% protein.

pork has still 2% more salt but whatever.

my goldmining is set to being very shortly. and my used car business is great as ever thanks for asking.

My folks do that every so often so we get a lot from them. The taste, even just the ground beef, is unbelievable.
