I'm a Mudhoney guy, but I've got no problem with Nirvana being the band that became the breakout act. They summed up the Sub Pop thing pretty well, though I do think Mark Lanegan was the better frontman, and the Screaming Trees, in an alternate universe, were the band that conquered the mainstream.

I like Alice in Cahins a lot, but you can definitely see how they were influenced by the local scene and not vice versa with their transition from Facelift to Sap to Dirt. Without the other grunge bands, AiC probably spends their career playing in the hair metal sandbox.
