Anthony Jennings Pass Attempts Versus Mississippi St

It seems that many of our fans have already abandoned Jennings and want Harris to start this weekend. I feel that Jennings should still start, but Harris should receive close to equal playing time spread throughout the game. I am glad that our coaches aren't as reactionary as our fanbase.
Anyways, I analyzed Jennings pass attempts from last game based on down and distance:
- 1st and 10 - 4 for 7
- 2nd and 1-6 - No attempts
- 2nd and 7-10 - 4 for 11
- 2nd and 11 or longer - 1 for 1
- 3rd and 1-6 - 1 for 1
- 3rd and 7-10 - 2 for 5
- 3rd and 11 or longer - 1 for 1
This obviously doesn't take into account scrambles, because the play by play doesn't tell me whether it was a run or a pass.
What this tells me is that he had the down and distance against him the entire night.
He had one attempt on 2nd or 3rd for 6 or less yards which he completed. He was 4 of 7 on first down which isn't great, but above 50%.
That means he was 8 for 18 on 2nd or 3rd and 7 or longer which are obvious passing downs. He was also sacked on 2nd and 7, 3rd and 13, and 3rd and 9.
Hopefully, we can put Jennings in a better position to succeed in the future and not have to pass out of obvious passing downs 70% of the time.

Looking at it on paper doesn't show what we actually witnessed at the game.

quote:I agree we did him no favors as far as down and distance, but in all fairness several of those were directly because of him. Several misses to open receivers. Keeping the ball on the read option when the pitch would have been the better option.. Like on the 4th and 2 from the goal line. That wouldn't have changed any down and distance issues, but it highlights either his inability to make the proper read on the read option or his desire to do it on his on...

4 quarters of make a play and then not. The start of the game was telling as to our fate. First snap was fumbled.

I was going to write something similar but I feel it will be rejected

For the record, the read option is a possible handoff play when the qb is reading a defensive end, defensive tackle or outside linebacker. He holds the ball in the belly of the running back and either gives it or pulls it away.
On the 4th and 2 at the goal line, that was a speed option to the outside not a read option, and yes he should have pitched it.
I do think those jet sweeps were called keepers though and were just a fake without a read based on re-watching the game.

It's time to really start grooming Harris for the starting spot. The next time I see Jennings thow a ball to a receiver that wasn't his first look (from the pocket) will be the first time I've seen it. If you want to keep him the starter by name for now, fine, but Harris needs to come in on the 3rd series at least to get game reps with the first team, and gradually he needs to be the one getting the lions share of the PT. He's a better player, he's the one who came in with the guys in this loaded class, and IMO he seems like more of a leader than Jennings.

as an fyi, when ppl say read option, they're not talking about that type of play. that was a speed option with a lead blocker. there's still "reading" involved (as with all option plays), but "read option" is pretty much synonymous with zone read.

so according to this...LSU passed more on 1st and 2nd down than 3rd down
interesting...
that really goes against the run, run, pass bitchfest that the Rant loves to do

I am not really on the Harris bandwagon as I knew this would be a difficult year for LSU and don't have unreasonable expectations given our situation. However, any team, regardless of expectations, needs their QB to perform in passing situations. If the team can't run the ball effectively enough to create good situations, it is most likely because the opposition has no respect for the passing game to begin with and stacks the box on first and second down.

I initially knew that they threw the ball a good bit on 2nd down. My only surprise was on 1st down.

This is what's the most bothering to me because all of these incompletions lead to

Obviously other teams will blitz on those third down plays because of our inability to make the same pass on 2nd down

But don't bash Jennings for bullshite, made-up crap.
You want to know the first time Jennings threw a ball to a receiver that wasn't his first look?
It was in the first game.

Jennings did not miss several open receivers. He made 1 or 2 bad reads and threw to a guy covered, then had like 2-3 bad throws. However, they had at least 3-4 straight drops with him. Not to mention ppl are bitching about small things. Looking at the replay, it's very iffy that we even score on the option if he pitches it. It's the sec, they can run, no guarantee we score.
It's really fascinating that ppl are so obsessed with one quarterback and hate the other. Jennings has fullback and TE personnel in for almost his whole game. Harris comes in against a 3 man front playing soft zone with 3-4 wide and ppl go crazy about how great he is. We have yet to see Jennings in that type of situation

Moo St. goal line stand was a thing of beauty, but Lsu play calling just sucked! Who ever is calling the plays now needs to wise up. We are so predictable Bob Jones Hi could defend us.

This is actually pretty worrisome.
2nd and medium-to-short and ZERO pass attempts?
2nd and 1-3 yards is prime time for throwing the ball.
Hard to believe that didn't happen a single time.

Speaking of TE personnel, did he even look at a TE down the field all game?
