We have a winner on the gas pipeline. Ruling class wants Middle East natural gas to come into Europe through Syria and Turkey. Assad is friendly with Russia and Russia doesn't want competition with its natural gas sales so Assad doesn't want pipeline.

So Syria is in the path of the proposed Arab Gas Pipeline to Turkey and from Turkey to Eastern European markets?
Who wants to compete with the Arab Gas Pipeline for Eastern European markets? Israel via the Leviathan Gas Field?
