I just realized he was only 43 when he played this role. Looking back he seemed a lot older than that at the time. Duvall was 15 years older than him. That seems more in line with the character. I wonder if they dyed his hair white and stuff to make him look older. Can you think of other people whose ages seem off for their characters?

He pretty much knocked that role out of the park so I guess playing a certain age was just part of the acting he did.

Though to be honest, I don't know exactly how old he was supposed to be in the movie. I know Lonesome Dove was kind of in the middle of the series bookwise - before Streets of Laredo for sure. Plus, people aged a lot faster back then I think. Have to look back on when Goodnight/Loving made their first drive to see how old Goodnight was.
