I think this is a very interesting position. I have several friends in my old company that are in this position as well. The fact of the matter is most of them are not necessarily promoted on talent, but on potential. Potential will be very difficult to convey to a new employer, because your work may not reflect everything your employer saw to get you there. I am finding myself in this position right now. I'm immobile due to lack of 'experience.' I have great experience, but not longevity. I can't even make a lateral move to another company. It's frustrating. I'm focusing my attention in the near future on gaining credentials to bolster my résumé.
