Friends: Joey Tribiani never had a job, but Chandler had a good one. Rachel works on a coffee house (although that apartment is explained in an episode). Monica was a line cook that eventually made executive chef (but never seemed to work). And they lived in two bedroom apartments in Greenwich Village.

Yes, I said that the apartment was explained. But even if it was rent controlled, it would still be beyond what a line cook and a barista would be likely to afford.
And while Joey was Dr Drake for awhile, he was also out of work, a lot. So Chandler had to be paying almost all of the bills while he worked late on the weenus.
