Mississippi was a state for 77 years before that flag was adopted. The current flag was adopted in 1894 as a symbol of the confederacy, which was a rebellion against the federal government and a symbol of a state that promoted and institutionalized slavery.

South Carolina didn't start flying the flag over the State House until 1962 when the Civil Rights Movement was in full swing. And people wonder why the flag has such a negative meaning these days....
