First Dove Hunt

Making my first dove hunt in a couple weeks out in West Texas. Only been deer hunting before. Looking for advice and what to expect.
Food and lodging are taken care of, outside of tobacco and bourbon, what all do I need?
I've got an 870 in the safe. Should I roll with that or take advantage of tax free weekend and look for an auto or O/U? What other gear would be helpful?

Bring two guns for the hunt. Your barrel will get so hot, you'll need to put one down, switch. Find out what type of field your hunting, wear pants/shorts.

Bring yourself a wine cork and lighter to the field and burn the bottom of the cork a little and smear on your face. Make sure you cover it completely so they don't see your face. The tops of your hands and arms wouldn't hurt either.

Shooting Dove requires some anticipation, those little suckers are like hummingbirds. It'll look like they're going one way, then they're not.
I hate' em.

He's going to Texas where there is a 15 bird limit not Argentina...
Bring the 870. Low brass #7 is fine. Be patient and chose your shots. Khaki shorts, hiking boots, camo short sleeve shirt, camo hat, and lots of cold beer is how I like to roll. Be careful for snakes and have fun.

Headed to Texas myself a week from tomorrow. I have a semi-auto 12. It's a little softer on the shoulder than a pump or o/u if you shoot a lot. A trip to the skeet range wouldn't hurt if you aren't familiar with the leads on your gun. As far as ammo, I've had good luck with 7 1/2 shot, 1 1/8 oz, 1200+fps. You will have a great time! Enjoy the hunt and scenery.
Oh, and don't wear shorts out there hunting and watch for rattlers.

mojo dove good idea
bring bacon and jalepeno peps
listen to the game on Sirius on car radio while you hunt
depending on how many other hunters and how close, some eye protection from the little BBs

i would buy a auto. 870s are meant for shite conditions with water and mud.
i second the mojo
wear your hunters orange (hat, vest, even boots)

Bring some beer and plenty of shells. Wear something comfortable. My brother in law shot a limit in an orange columbia shirt tuesday.
Where are you going?

I wouldn't buy a shotgun for a single hunt...the 870 will be fine...I'd shoot low brass 2 3/4" lead #8 shot....
main thing is to get yourself geared for hot weather...go to academy and get yourself a cheap version of a fishing shirt in some drab color...also bring the following:
sunglasses (plastic lenses)
bullfrog sunscreen
disposable earplugs (some for shooting, some for sleeping)
camo pad-topped bucket or hunting stool
ETA: if your hunt is not guided, I would also bring something to put your birds in...like a cheap upland bird hunting vest...

frick that. I like to sit. Not lean.

you sit, your legs just arent parallel to the ground. i was skeptical also until i used it. its damn comfy.

Certainly a bucket to sit on. I quit shooting low brass a long time ago. I shoot high brass six shot. An old duck load. And I kill a lot more birds now plus none of my guns hang up. All except my Citori hung up on low brass.

I think I would break that thing
