You make less money, but many people want these jobs.

Not to mention that they usually get paid to go to conferences, set their own hours (generally), and get paid extra to teach a summer course (at my university it was like 1/9 of their full salary); it's really a good gig in many situations. I guess it depends on the field though. Whereas some fields there are hundreds if not thousands of applicants for one job, in my field there are 20 to 30 jobs every year and some do not get filled.

If you have tenure, which can be difficult to achieve. Until then, you work your arse off and kiss a lot of other people's asses. And tenured positions are being phased out at a lot of universities. The cushy academic career is becoming a thing of the past.

You have no clue what you are talking about.

I work in Academia (sciences). Most professors in my dept work 60+ hours a week in a pretty stressful setting of research, teaching, and service.

Summers off. That's hilarious. To do what?

I know some schools have 10 month contracts - but at LSU I can't think of a single academic I work with who takes summers off.

Not in the hard sciences, and not at large research universities
