Guns don't kill people. Little girls kill people.

This.

A 9 or 10 year old boy killed himself the same way several years ago at a Massachusetts gunshot.

Guns nuts.

Yeah I see it's been changed. Last night it showed up until it shot him so you could see the entire progression.

Uzi is a very heavy firearm, any 9 yr old would have trouble handling one. As far as recoil goes there is none, but even in semi auto muzzle rise is an issue. In full auto it is extremely easy to get away from you

I would not let anyone shoot mine without a great deal of training first

When does the NRA start mugging for the camera defending the rights of a 9 year old firing an uzi?

Well I think there is a balance to be struck when it comes to kids and guns. I start taking my kids to the range with me when they reach the age of 6. My son has now been going to the range with me for almost 7 years and is very well versed on firearms operation and safety. I'm just staring the process of teaching these things to my 6 yr old daughter.

But having said that, there's no way I'd allow a 9 yr old girl to fire a Uzi. My son that's been going to the range with me for years still hasn't fired an Uzi.

Let's assume for the sake of argument this is something you do want to do:

Every one of mine - and I've instructed them all - goes through a very specific training process.

First, we dry fire in a very safe environment. That gives you everything but the bang.

Second, when we go to the range the first time - I fire the weapon, to make certain everything is in correct working order.

Third, with a 9-year old, 19-year old or 90-year old - I would load A SINGLE ROUND and wrap myself around them to make certain they're holding the weapon correctly.

Fourth, coach the new firer through a single round fire.

At that point, I would probably load 2 or 3 rounds (if a semi) or a full cylinder and let the new firer empty a magazine, and safely clear the weapon.

Now, an additional step with an automatic weapon - load 2 or, perhaps, 3 rounds, so that, particularly a firer with no experience firing a weapon on automatic, gets to experience it without the risk of spraying a whole room (and me) with a full magazine. Then progress to 5, 6, and then a full magazine, if the firer is comfortable.

I would never load a full magazine and hand to a person who had never fired a fully automatic weapon before without going through these steps.

With proper supervision from someone who has firearms training, a 9 yr old is quite capable of learning to safely operate a wide variety of firearms, but not an Uzi.

One of the main advantages of giving your kid's firearms training is that you take away the mystery and curiosity of firearms. This makes them less likely to want to "play" with a gun if they ever come into contact with one.

The recoil of an Uzi is NOT intense in the least bit- it uses a 9mm pistol round.

Full auto in a light weapon causes the muzzle to dance around, though. That's why SMG and machine pistol designers often ADD weight to the muzzle end of the weapon to keep the muzzle down during fully automatic fire.

Having said that, MP5, Uzi and even the Ingram Macs are all relatively easy to control - by a grown man or woman.

Even better would be an M4 or M16 - the heavier weight of the weapon makes controlled fire of rifle rounds at automatic or burst mode more manageable.

And even better are real machineguns - very heavy and that's a good thing when you're firing 600 rounds per minute.

This is a sad story and should give people pause about a cavalier attitude about firearms safety.

There's nothing wrong with kids shooting guns - as long as safety is paramount.

Very sad. Really feel for the 9 year old. I hope it doesn't frick her up permanently.

FYI, I've let my 8 year old shoot AR-15's for a few years. When he does I'm either helping him hold it steady, or he's on his stomach trying to shoot at distance.

Exactly. One thing I'd recommend to parents is that if you've never had "range control" and firearms safety training yourself, then go find someone reputable to give you this training. But even there you cannot let down your guard for even a second. This guy was trained but he messed up for only a second. That second cost him his life and ruined the life of this little girl.

Is this info correct? It seems impossible to shoot 30/second. And I would think that the barrel would melt if someone shot 1700 rounds in a minute.

Open bolt operation can do 30/second.

The MG-42 could fire 1500 rounds a minute.

Which is around 50 rounds/second.

Uzi is rated at 600 per min (10/sec) cyclical rate.

I'm sure from a practical standpoint, it can be higher. Again, why give a child a full magazine if you're not certain she can handle 3, 5, 7, etc.? Just seems outside of prudent safety protocols.
