I think a quality light brown or tan loafer is probably the most versatile shoe. Great with khakis. Fine with light dress slacks. Good with jeans. Some will try it with shorts and it can work.

To me, black lace up oxfords work with suits and dark colored slacks. Arguably with jeans, but I'm not a fan of that in this region.

This is what I typically wear. Or a burgundy (ox blood) colored dress shoe. Very versatile shoes. I try to shy away from black shoes. They just seem to "conservative" for my liking.
