I'd rather be perceived as really awesome at my job than a really BA dresser.

Again. That's not what he's saying. You obviously need to be good at your job, but perception does come into play. In most cases as someone moves up the ladder, they become more external facing for the company and thus carry that with them.

They are going to want someone who is competent and is perceived as competent by others.
