re: Beckwith and the LBs

Baloo is on to something here. Welter has improved, he looked better toward the end of the season, and yes I know the slow Iowa white guys will come up, but he also looked much better against A&M.
I know I'm getting old, but is it somewhat disturbing to everybody that the "brains" of our defense had to sit out a year for academics.
I think it is Beckwith's position to take and he better be making progress or a true freshman from Illinois might.

I know Welter gets bashed a lot, but he's a good leader and has great football knowledge.
Great we have coaches for that. Can he make plays?

Consistently gets the D in position.
A lot of busted coverages seems that he is inconsistent with that

becoming an avg SEC MLB in his own right.
This is wrong. I think you try to convince yourself of this notion that "just because he plays, he must be a good player."
He is not an average SEC middle linebacker. He is a liability in the middle of our defense. If you disagree, go back and watch any football game he has participated in and come back with some analysis that proves that to be true (hint: you can't). The kid probably works his arse off, and I'm grateful for that, but he just isn't an average SEC player (to date, I'm not speculating on this upcoming season).
Now, Beckwith has all of the potential in the world. However, there must be a reason he hasn't seen the field yet, especially with who is in front of him. Hopefully he figures out whatever is holding him back and comes into his own this year!

Yes, because DJ is responsible for the play of everyone on the defense. That's reasonable. Safety gets burned. Dj's fault. He gets the defense lined up. They still have to play their position.

Has DJ gotten any bigger? Last year, he just seemed like a lightweight fighting heavyweights too many times. I picture a middle linebacker as someone that anchors in the middle and doesnt get washed away often. No disrespect for DJ but he seemed to be overwhelmed by 300+lb lineman crashing through. Additionally, he rarely stepped up to the line of scrimmage on running plays to meet the backs in the hole with a thump.

IF all he does is get the CB on the sides, the safeties in back the Linebackers in the middle and the Dline in the right order than what does he do?
What is he so great at? Do you see him making last minute audibles?
Also your point is about making plays. Should he fricking make a play? Getting dragged into secondary isn't good enough to rely on calling a defensive play as an excuse.
The question isn't why is he playing, but how is there no one bette than him

It is up to Beckwith to force Welter to the bench. I don't mean this to insult Welter, but the reason Welter plays is because Beckwith has not taken his job. That's what I want from the Beckwith, to live up to his talent and force his way onto the field.
Well put.
So you don't think Chief is just trolling everyone by playing an inferior guy at MLB? That's what tRant told me.

I think that the answer to this is not just about a personnel change at MLB because Beckwith wouldn't have been able to consistently handle RBs breaking free down the middle with OGs targeting him either. After all, an OG is used to blocking DTs right? An average MLB shouldn't be able to shed him at will consistently.
The solution starts with the trust that our sophomore CBs have earned after proving themselves last year and in the practices since.
First, the strong safety will be there to help that MLB nearly every play.
Second, instead of backing up the two CBs, Mills should be able to take some of the coverage responsibilities away from the OLBs and allow them to focus more on the rush.
The end result is that we aren't going see our defense lose the numbers game any more. Remember how the Tigers used to flock to the ball? Those announcers would always be impressed by their pursuit. This had a lot to do with winning the numbers game by not having to put one or both of our safeties 20 plus yards deep to back up our corners.
Even though I could write ten thousand more words about this, all that we really need to know is that DBU is finally back and this year's defense is going to do things a lot more like they did back in 2011.
So lets not hate on DJ. This is his money year and I love seeing our seniors happy on draft day. If he really can't hack it then he will be replaced no matter what we think anyway.
Although I know that they are in the minority, anyone who honestly thinks that last year's defensive decline was due to DJ Welter is a fool to begin with and should be slammed on site. DJ is a Tiger warrior of Death Valley and should be respected as such and honored at every opportunity.

You hit the nail on the head and drove it all the way. Great analysis.

Beckwith will be a stud. Layed a big time hit in the scrimmage. Strong d line play should really make our LBs shine.

No coach is flawless.
I'm glad chavis is our dc, but he's made some weird calls in the past. Made many more great calls than bad.

"I know I'm getting old, but is it somewhat disturbing to everybody that the "brains" of our defense had to sit out a year for academics. " Welter took and passed every class his acedemic advisor told him he needed to stay eligible. The acedemic advisor was wrong, and subsequently fired. Welter wasn't the only kid that year that had to sit out. There were 4 or 5 others, but the only kid everyone remembers is Welter.

Rayne Tiger, congrats on your first post, I'm not very far ahead of you. I appreciate the info...just have never seen your comment before on the rant and this always worried me.

Nah, I'm not DJ, but my son goes to the same high school he went to.

Aw. I got really excited

I don't post often, Ha! but it's gets old seeing this kid get bashed. He works his behind off doing something the rest of us only dream we could. Is he a perfect MLB, not even close, but he's obviously the best choice.

Beckwith will play. Welter will play. Hell, we will have 5 LBers see a lot of time in Kwon, Beckwith, Welter, Debo, and LL. The only 1 that should never come off the field is Kwon. The rest will be rotating a good bit, depending on who we are playing and strategy. But Kwon should never come off the field.
I know a lot of people are excited about Hunter and Tre White and RR... But Kwon is the best returning starter on the D. And will be 1 of our best, if not the best, defensive player. He was our best LB last year and will be better. And he's up to 230lbs now...
He's ready to go

If DJ starts then it means he's trying hard and can corral the defensive and can at least pad his stats with 9/10 tackles...it's not his fault if he starts....but at the same time I feel like I'm taking crazy pills when I read these posts by some of you homers....DJ is usually behind every play, and half or more of his tackles are from partial credit due to him jumping on the pile basically......it's unreal the subpar talent at MLB if he starts....he's not elite talent, and I'm sorry but you can't have a top defense with a weak spot like DJ.
Bash away, but you know it's obvious some of the younger talent should be starting above him..

Meh... I don't know about obviously. Just using an example here but was JJ obviously the best choice because he started? I don't know what goes on in the coaches office when decisions are made but I know what I see on the field. To say DJ is obviously the best choice I wonder if we are watching the same games.
