Fact. The first versions of this airframe had a crosshairs PAINTED on the pilots window. He just put the plane in a circular bank until the crosshairs was on the target and they went to pound town.

Now there are a handful of computer operators in the back and a gazillion computers running things.

The ones they used in Vietnam were called "spooky" or "puff the magic dragon". They were old WWII era Douglas C-47's (the same planes that dropped the paratroopers in Normandy during D-Day) that had been modified as gunships.

My Dad flew Forward Air Control in Vietnam. He was in a single-engine Cessna flying at tree top level with smoke bombs to mark the targets. Of course, he was an easy target for Charlie as well. He got several medals, made it home alive and is still with us.
