What good would it do to bench him for Chad Henne and watch the offense sputter?

The idea is that you don't want to put your young qb in a situation where he is set up to fail. They might want to get a little talent around him before just throwing him into the fire.

A more recent example of just throwing the rookie quarterback in day 1 was David Carr. He started in a offense with a horrible offensive line and he set records for most sacks given up probably years in a row if I remember correctly. Some say this ruined his confidence, and we will never know how he would have turned out if he hadn't been put in a situation to fail.

Fair points, but the last time they threw a rookie QB into the deep end, he drowned.

Yea but that was Blaine Gabbert...

Go read that other thread about how bad he is... it's so funny

I honestly think the Jags are scarred for life from Gabbert and wouldn't start a rookie QB even if Peyton Manning came out of a time machine from 1998

And no one knows what Bortles is going to be.

ETA: Do you have the same opinion with all rookie QBs coming into teams with mediocre starting QBs? Manziel and Bridgewater come to mind.

True, and Chad Henne is a solid player that has proven he can win games at this level.

They prob wont be. The Jags may be the worst drafting team of all time so I have no faith in the guys they drafted this year.

Bortles will be legit sooner than later. But they have no weapons on O. Zero. None. They need a lot of help.

Cecil Shorts is no slouch and the Lee and Robinson, the 2 WRs they drafted could be studs.

Yes, I do. If you invest high draft picks in QBs, it's usually because you are not confident that your long term answer is on the roster. Do you think that Matt Cassel, Brian Hoyer, and Chad Henne are the long term answers at QB for those teams? If they are not, then why delay the inevitable? These guys are young, hungry, and full of talent and upside.

I do understand the risk for the GM though... if you start your rookie, it's nearly impossible to pull him and go back to the veteran, because you basically have insulted the vet and shattered the rookie's confidence.

Do you think the Colts should have started Curtis Painter 2 years ago so Andrew Luck could sit and learn the system?

Stop bringing up Blaine Gabbert. This is a completely new regime. New coaching staff and front office. I believe in Gus Bradley and Jedd Fisch. They are not going to let Blake get killed this year. Our offensive line is still raw and will not be very good this year. The Jags are in a good position for the future and letting Blake Bortles get sacked 90 times this year is not going to help it at all.

If you understand the risk and still think it's work it, that's fine. I don't think it depends on which player and which team.

That's a terrible analogy. Luck was a can't miss #1 draft pick. No one is saying that about Bortles or Manziel or Bridgewater.

Defense is their strongest phase of the game. If you play strong D and have above average special teams, you can win 7-8 games in the NFL with just responsible offense. They are really young, but Gus Bradley has built a Seattle-esque defense down there.

Edit: They have Poppa Loston on the roster. Didn't realize that.

Luck was drafted #1 overall, Bortles #3. I know that Luck is unique but draft position wise, they are not that separate.

Not really trying to argue with you or anything, I guess I just really feel that Bortles should be the starter in Jacksonville this year. If I'm a Jags fan, that's what I want.

ETA: and his girlfriend has really big boobies.

Luck and Bortles are in two different leagues.

I'm just discussing. No animosity. I don't necessarily disagree that Bortles should start at some point this year, but making him the Week 1 starter is setting him up to fail.

Indeed.

Jags getting 11pts week 1 vs Philly has to be the large play of the day

And, whether they win or not, looks like you could have a shitload of fun at the new pool cabanas:

Why not? The AFC South is arguably the worst division in the NFL. Houston has good talent, but absolutely nothing at QB. They were the worst team in the league last year. Tenn. just brought in a new coach, and starts a QB who can't stay on the field. Even when he is on the field he hasn't been great. Indy is the best team in the Div., but I don't think they're at the level they were when Manning was QB (yet).

If Jacksonville was in then NFC West, I might agree. But in the AFC South (and AFC in general) it's not that far-fetched to see them at least "contend" for a playoff spot soon.

How do you get an invite to the pool cabana btw? It was really funny because there was a horribly fat shirtless man in the pool for the cabana launch party and the camera guys kept trying to frame the guy out of the shot but he kept on moving into it.

I thought the interview with Clemmons was interesting. He and someone else came over from Seattle. They were asked if they'd do what Seattle did. Clemmons said "no, no one can do what Seattle has done. We're going to do things differently. We are going to instill something that lasts."

I don't have a big problem with Henne starting but I'd love to see Bortles get a series every once in awhile just to get him some game time experience.

D will be good for the Jags this year. All the WRs are injuired right now but when they come back, it'll be nice to see what they can do. I thought robinson looked alright at RB and it'll be good when we can see what Gerheart does when he gets back. Overall, I'm hoping for a 6-7 win campaign. Won't be able to get 3 tickets for $30 then though.

The correct answer is:

Much better than the Cowboys will be this season.

What about Toby Gerhart in a starting role? He was pretty good as Adrian Peterson's back up, no?

What are you expecting of him? I don't think he's terrible but if he's your RB1, you have issues at the RB position.
