Wife got me a pit barrel cooker for my birthday. Starting the first smoke today.
9 pound pork butt went on at 7:50. It's already at 185. Will update with finished pics.

Already at 185? What temp are you running?

It stays around anywhere from 275-315. I've been on the higher side for this first smoke.
The pit barrel cooks very different than a traditional smoker.
amazing ribs review

It's a bad arse looking smoker.

Just threw on a whole cabbage.
At 196 now on the butt, will pull and rest at 203.
Time for some good people pale ale!

This smoker is different. It's basically air tight. No top vent only a lower vent that you set according to elevation. It works well due to keeping the humidity in the smoker for moisture.
It's referred to as a power cooker, not low and slow.
Finished butt in 5 hours 45 minutes.

That thing looks badass. I'd love to own one but with three pits already, I honestly don't need another.
One of my "pits" is the Orion Cooker, which uses this same kind of convection cooking. The only…and I mean ONLY…drawback to it is that the cooking chamber is so moist that it's hard to get a really good bark on shoulders.
Congrats on the new toy!

What is the brand of this cooker and where can you find them in BR?

It's pit barrel cooker brand. Made in America by an ex marine. Excellent customer service, you can actually speak to the owner if you call.

Just finished a 9 pound pork butt, whole chicken, and some sausage. I lit the pit at 7:30 it's still at 225 and it's now 12 hours in. I haven't added any fuel.

I saw that, did you monitor your temp the entire cook? If so what we're you running?

I didn't on this one. Waiting for my Maverick ET 733 set up to be delivered.

I hope to do a brisket on it soon. Will definitely report. So far, I can't recommend this thing enough.
The owner has a YouTube channel where he has videos for cooking all sorts of meats if you want to check that out in the mean time.

Yea I'm gonna check his channel out when I get some good internet.
How much does it take to fill up the charcoal box? One site was saying something like 150 pieces? Is that right?

Not positive at the moment. I filled the basket halfway, them filled a chimney starter. Barely out a dent in my 20lb bag of coals.
An interesting note after I cut the oxygen to the coals, I ended up having about half a platic grocery bag worth of usable coal left over. I think this thing will burn consistently for 10 hours at least. I'll find out for the LSU Wisconsin game
ETA: Just remembered that the owner says a full load of fuel is 8lb of Kingsford Blue.

I plan on doing brisket for the game as well. After everything was done cooking I took off the lid to let it burn out. I went to cover it at about 14 hours into the cook, 2 hours after the lid came off and it was still around 200.
This little smoker amazed the hell out of me.
