quote:Prior to the strike year (87 I think), we had a good case for WORST franchise in football, and possibly in professional sports. Zero playoff trips, zero winning seasons, first team the expansion Buccaneers beat. Thought we might turn the corner with Manning/Muncie/Chandler/Galbreath after they had a good offense in 79, only to go 1-15 the next season.

Remember that great team Mora had in the 80's, with the Dome Patrol? Well, not a lot of other teams' fans do, since it was only a few seasons, and we lost every playoff game. Our best season that stretch was the strike year, and it's pretty hard to call that anything outside of blind luck, that the disaster brought the league down to us, more than we rose... and because we were able to pillage the USFL more than most of the other teams did.
you then had Haslett's little run of a couple seasons, where we finally did win a playoff game.
Those 2 stretches were basically the only time we didn't totally suck, prior to the Brees/Payton era; a lot of the teams you think we should be ahead of- they at least had winning seasons, or .500 seasons scattered around.

Interesting, but I think that the formula should account for seasons played. For instance if team A has only been around 10 years and has 4 playoff appearances, to me that is better than Team B that has been around 20 years and has 5 playoff appearances. Team A makes the playoffs 40% of the time, whereas Team B makes the playoffs 25% of the time.
Also, it was easier to win a SB when there were 24 franchises than there are now that there are 32.
