How slow do you think even net surfing is on that thing he linked? It's bad and dude says he uses two of them as HTPCs. I hope he added an HDD at least. 80GB HDD for an HTPC is pretty pointless. Not to mention it's 5400 RPM. Geez...

ETA: He uses it as an HTPC and it only has a VGA port. Chances are it doesn't even run 1080p video as not all VGA outputs will output true 1080p.

That think looks like it has single channel analog audio too.

I'm sure it would surf the web just fine, provided that's all you were running at the time and didn't have more than a couple of tabs open, and it was a lightweight browser without too many extensions or add-ons. It's a one-thing-at-a-time PC that would end up frustrating the hell out of an older person who would likely pay less attention to resource management. It takes the concept of "CPU is not that important" to a new level of retard, with a CPU offering a fraction of the single- and multi-threaded performance you'd get even from an i3. The CPU is worse than the cheapest Haswell Celeron you can buy. Let's not forget that DDR2 running at half the speed of even the native IMC specs for any CPU released in the last 5 years. The hard drive, not only 5400 rpm and a pathetic capacity, but also likely to have a 2MB cache vs 64MB on modern drives, which means any reasonable amount of file caching is out the window. That hard drive would be slow from the start and painfully unusable after a few months of standard use by a novice. Yeah, the amount of stupid in this suggestion is dangerous.

I built a similar machine inside the shell of a VCR about 8 years ago. It was still pretty crappy back then too.

Exactly

My parents had a 5-6 year old laptop with close to the same specs as that PoS he listed and were constantly bothering me about why it was so slow. I went and bought them a new one just for my own sanity.

hey LSUtoo, quick question.

I can get the SSD drive for $40-50 cheaper for going with the 128GB

can I get by with that or do you recommend the 256? just running 8.1 64 bit off of it, that's it

TIA
