I know this doesn't pertain to money, but are there any professional engineers on this board that can give me some advice on how and what to study for the test?

i'm a civil PE, but I may be able to give some insight
I assume they have a ME reference manual that I suggest getting
this is a good tool not only for the test, but in profession
testmasters is a good course to take, but its expensive
some of your colleagues likely have a binder with the testmasters material for your discipline
I had a few example tests but I found that the best and most accurate depiction of the test format and difficulty was in the NCEES practice exam manual
it was 80 questions just like the test is, and it was very close to types of questions in the actual exam

I'm a ChemE and I used a book with practice problems called "Practice Problems for the Chemical Engineering PE Exam." I'd assume they'd have one for ME's.
I then had a booklet I made myself with various conversion, rules of thumb, etc.

All of this.
The best thing you can do IMO is read through all the questions on the portion you are taking before starting the test. Come up with a numbering/lettering system to rank each question so you knock out the easiest ones first and save the more difficult ones towards the end of time. The test just as much about time management as it is understanding your discipline.

I am working through Lindeburgs Practice problem book, but how do the actual test questions compare to his book? Most of them would be tough to finish in 6 min.

Which discipline did you take?

For EV actual test questions were much easier than the sample questions.
I found a study course on DVD that had really good reference materials for the test.
I also found a sample test for CE. I'm sure they have one for ME.
Good Luck
