What is the best # of bench players in a league that starts this lineup? Qb, Rb, wr,wr,TE, flex, d/st, k. PPR 12 man league. 4 or 5 bench players?

Depends.
The bigger the bench the more emphasis there is on draft day by paying attention to bye weeks and many people consider it harder. Additionally, it makes it harder to pick up free agents and with injuries it is alot harder to rebound.
The smaller the bench the more free agents there are and the more waiver wire action you will have.
That being said, the difference between 4 or 5 isn't really much of a difference unless you require teams carry two TEs, etc.

4 or 5 is way too low.

I like a 16-man roster. Go with an eight man bench with 8 starters (minimum 7). My preferable option is:
9 starters:
1 QB
2 RB
2 WR
1 TE
1 Flex
1 D/ST
1 K
7 Bench

We've been using this format since 06 in this league. Because it PPR we give an option to start 2RB's & 2 WR's or 1 RB and 3WR. If we ever went to a non PPR I would make everyone start 2 RB's. I kinda like the weekly strategy behind our "unusual" format. I'm gonna keep it at 5 bench spots. Somebody in my league was lobbying for 4 bench spots to stimulate waiver wire action I guess.
