I really like BB and TDK, but why does it feel like Nolan's movies fricked everything up?

If Nolan's movies weren't so successfull we wouldn't have this problem. Some characters, like Batman, lend themselves to a dark tone. Some characters, like Superman, don't. I'm kind of interested to see the Marvel shows on Netflix because they could go darker with them and have it still work.
