Yep, I'd lay down my life for my dog.
Why? Don't currently have a dog, but have in the past. I'd do a lot to save/protect, but there's no way I'm sacrificing myself.

Why?
because my dog is like a family member to me. I'm not saying I'd choose the dog over my wife, or give up a kidney for it. But if my FBD was drowning or something similar, oh hell yes, I'd do anything I could to save her.
I doubt the victim intended to drown while saving this dog-anymore than I would. But shite goes wrong quickly and these things happen.
For people to find fault with his decision or suggest his effort was in error is foolish. Lots of choices end tragically or with unintended results. Doesn't mean the guy was wrong. Just didn't get teh outcome he intended.
