Prather and Mike Hillman were QB's of the LSU freshman team at the same time. Hillman was the lefty and Prather was a righty.

I seem to remember Prather died due to the serious injuries he suffered in Vietnam where one leg had to be amputated. In the freshman team he was as good or perhaps a tad better than Hillman, and Hillman was the QB as a senior for the 1969 team that only lost to Ole Miss and Archie Manning, a game that LSU had very much in hand leading 23-12 and we wound up losing 26-23.

Here's the story. I was alive and paying attention when it happened. Prather was a great pocket passer. Not an option/running QB. In those years Coach Mac preferred a running QB. Don't know if he sold Prather a bill of goods or not. But after his freshman year Prather realized that LSU was not going to be a passing school so he dropped out.

That caused him to lose his college deferment for the draft. Went to VN and got killed There is a monument at Woodlawn HS erected shortly after his death.
