2014 highlander car buying advice?

2014 XLE Highlander
Edmunds has the below listed for pricing
Factory Invoice
$34,306
Average Price Paid
$35,543
MSRP
$37,659
Just casually I've been emailing dealerships for pricing and they are already coming in at about the average price paid. Any recommendations on what number I should reach? Some of my research shows that they have about 3% percent holdback and some mark up in finance and advertising type fees. Maybe 4-5% total. Any suggestions would help. I'm not sure if the invoice number on Edmunds has this factored into the invoice number or not. TIA.
ETA: I think the 2015 are right around the corner too. Does anyone ever remember rebates being offered on Highlanders? I'm not in a serious rush so I have time to wait for the right deal.

How does this work? What will this do in terms of price?
To the OP: I stopped at Team Toyota in BR to look at one the other day with the wife and kids. I told the salesman I didn't have time to drive it or haggle over prices. I asked him to give me a ballpark on the deal he could do. He of course gave me the old "there's just not much profit built into this model and no rebates right now." I told him I would be in touch. The he said "I would like to at least get $500 over invoice so I can make something off the deal." I told him I paid much less than invoice on my truck and he responded by saying that's likely because of all the rebates and incentives I got (which is true). I told him I had to go and he asked me to please give him a chance to see what he can give me. I may go back if I decide to buy that car. My wife totaled her car so I need one pretty quick, but I won't tell the salesman that.

Did he ball park you the invoice price by any chance?

Wouldn't a weak salesman be better for him?

No, simply because they will stick with a number and give every reason in the world to not move from it. Saying that is a rookie mistake.

I love reading all these car purchasing threads. I feel like it will make me more confident in negotiations when it's time for me to purchase a new vehicle.
Coach Guidry, appreciate all your input. I don't know if I would have the patience to deal with all the negative comments. (not in this thread)

I feel for you too coach. I'm still researching trucks at the moment. When dealerships are offering so many incentives and discounts it's hard to even get a base line of a trucks true value. My understanding is you sell Hondas so those and Toyotas are a different ball game when it comes to rebates. But I feel the info in all these threads has made me a more confident buyer.

Yeah, it took me a little off guard when he said it. We were just standing by my truck as I was leaving. I figured he would make me inch him down if he budged at all. He knew I wasn't there to wheel and deal, just was looking for a ball park.

I'd email some high volume dealers in Houston before buying local. Then give the local dealers a chance to compete. 2014 was a new Highlander design, so I wouldn't expect any rebates.

Crazy fact...at least when it comes to Honda...Lafayette/Baton Rouge Market averages lower sales prices than the Houston market. Why do you ask? Houston dealers think this way...There are 4 million people in our market; we don't care if we piss you off.

Usaa said dealer price in houston for FWD around 34.8k, think BR was 35.3...34.2 in my zip in virginia.
Seems like anything 34k would be fair deal
