How else can one become the world's foremost Proust scholar?

Not true. Study what you love, good jobs come to those who have passion and drive. My wife majored in French Lit and does very well for herself in a business related field. She read books in a foreign language and wrote 10+ page papers in hat language discussing themes that may or may not be present in the US. Ten times harder than a fricking business degree.
I graduated in physics and it's shite for jobs, the most recent things we studied in undergrad were from the 50's.
I feel sorry for people who go to college for a specific job. What a boring way to go.

So is it not evident to everybody yet that a humanities major fricked this dude's girlfriend?

Because nobody tells them otherwise. A lot of 18 yr old college kids are told to "major in what interests them" then are pretty screwed for the first couple of years after graduation.

It's all about how you plan ahead for your career. If you major in the humanities just for fun, without a clear idea about your career goals and ambitions, you'll fail. If you learn a foreign language or two and consider the multitude of job options that are available for someone who is literate, with critical thinking skills, international experience, you'll do extremely well.
One interesting related question is why people major in STEM without a well-rounded education:
The STEM Crisis Is a Myth
