Luckily a few days before the trip, a deal on Orbitz got me a mid-sized SUV for $85 per day. Gladly jumped on it.
It's expensive to rent a car in Denver. Also, avoid the smaller companies like Fox Rental and Advanced. They get horrible reviews. We luckily got our deal from Enterprise and it was pretty darned smooth.
Maybe you don't get the deals until you get the weekly rate, but I'm finding a minivan (kids coming) for the week of thanksgiving for $475 base rate for a week. The august rates are going to about that for a mid size for only 4 days.
eta, I got the minivan reservation through national, just searched their direct site for the August dates, it simply said "Sold Out", before I even had a chance to look at options.

The past two January's, my friends and I rented full-size four-wheel-drive SUVs (Yukon) for less than $100
That does sound high. You've tried kayak I presume?
